Google Classroom - A Total Win- Win
It seemed a few years ago every school website you visited had that magic button that took you to the school's VLE. This was a virtual learning environment (VLE) that allowed students to access all manner of work at home and allowed children to continue their learning when not in school. It also allowed parents and guardians to take part in their children's learning.
These online platforms were not free, yet schools fell over themselves to make sure they were not the poor relation and were seen to be keeping up with “The Jones”, modern technology and a different way for children to access work.
It seems odd that when Google Classroom was launched on 12 August 2014, nobody was in the least interested. Truly the mother of all VLEs, Google Classroom is totally free and allows children to access work both in and out of school in a way that was previously impossible to do.
Almost all the lessons at Aldwyn Primary School will make some use of Google Classroom. It allows staff to easily add links to websites, videos for children to watch, PDF’s to read and worksheets we may want children to complete. More importantly, it has encouraged an ethos of working at home and you can read more about this by clicking HERE.
Before the summer break year 2 worked hard to log into a computer using their own name and then into their Google account so they could access the power of Google Cloud and Google Classroom. We know some children in year 2 continued to work at home because around a dozen parents requested login details. This year we will get year 2 using Google Workspace for Education when they return after the summer break. That will give them a whole year to get used to working with this system and prepare them to shift up a gear when they move into year 3.
